About R. Brian Woodward, J.D.

Mr. Woodward concentrates his practice on defending individuals charged with crimes in state and federal courts. He has represented criminal defendants for over 35 years, both privately and as court-appointed counsel. Presently, Mr. Woodward is a panel attorney for the Federal Defender’s office representing federal defendants in such matters as drug crimes, conspiracies, felon-in-possession of a firearm, immigration violations, bank robberies, and other federal charges. He also represents private clients charged with federal charges, including white collar crimes.


On the state level, Mr. Woodward represents private clients charged with all levels of felony or misdemeanor. He is also a member of the public defender’s office for Lake County, Indiana assigned to the criminal appellate division. Criminal matters handled have included: murder, voluntary manslaughter, kidnapping, theft, conversion, armed bank robbery, narcotics dealing and possession, child pornography, public corruption, stalking, arson, possession of a firearm by a felon, conspiracy, as well as other felony charges.

Mr. Woodward also devotes a substantial amount of his practice representing individuals in civil matters. These include civil litigation (corporate and individual), real estate matters and water rights, transactional corporate matters, and estate planning and probate. As the former owner of a title company, he has specific familiarity with real estate matters.

As an appellate lawyer, Mr. Woodward has argued in front of the Indiana Court of Appeals, Indiana Supreme Court, and the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.

Education

R. Brian Woodward began his college education at Wabash College from 1978 through 1980. He then matriculated to Valparaiso University where he graduated, with distinction, in 1982. He received his Juris Doctor Degree from Valparaiso University School of Law in 1985. While at Valparaiso University School of Law, Mr. Woodward served as Associate Editor of the Valparaiso University Law Review, and wrote a note entitled “Roadblocks in the Fourth Amendment: The Constitutionality of DUI Checkpoints.” In addition, Mr. Woodward was awarded the Vaughn Award for outstanding work in trial advocacy.

Mr. Woodward is presently a member of the Lake County Bar Association and the Indiana State Bar Association.
